It’s a shame that America is one of the only modern countries that does not offer universal or affordable healthcare to its citizens. That being said, health insurance can be expensive, especially if it’s not offered through your job or you’re self-employed like me.
I’m young(ish) and don’t have any health conditions, so I feel semi-comfortable with opting out of health insurance. But everyone gets sick or wants to talk to a doctor every now and then. Without insurance, that can get really pricey, really quickly.
For instance, my birth control prescription was about to expire, so I called around to a few doctor’s offices in my area to find out how much it would cost to get a papsmear. The average price was $350. I also checked a low income clinic, and although the rate was $50 for doctor’s visits, there was a six week waiting list. If I had to wait that long, I’d be going in for an ultrasound.
Now, I have bought birth control online before from Prjkt Rby, but they had a limited amount of brands to choose from. My preferred brand was not offered so I wanted to get a prescription for it.
Several months ago when I was doing research on where to get affordable birth control, I found Maven Clinic – a digital clinic where you can video chat with real doctors, nurses, nutritionists, therapists, and more. I had a free appointment with a nurse where we talked about different birth control options. But at that time, I decided to order from Prjkt Rby instead.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I’m ready to switch back to my old BC, I remember Maven. Partly because they asked me to be an ambassador and I get emails from them a couple of times a month. So I booked a discounted appointment with a doctor.
The doctors available to choose from are licensed to practice medicine in your state so they will be able to prescribe you medication. There were 3 or 4 to choose from in Georgia, so I selected one and sent her a message. In some cases, you will be able to book and appointment right away – within minutes – but none of the doctors in my state offered that at the time. However, she did get back to me within a couple of hours, so we made an appt for the following day.
When it’s time for your appointment, make sure that you have the Maven Clinic app downloaded onto your iPhone or have a webcam on your PC. I used the app on my iPhone, and they sent me a reminder about 5-10 minutes before the appointment. When it was time, I just opened the app and waited for the doctor to join.
The doctor’s sessions are 10 minutes long, whichwas plenty of time to go over what I needed. Prior to the appt, I was able to enter any relevant medical info into my online profile that the doctor could access. During our appointment, she asked the typical doctor/gyno questions. I also had the opportunity to discuss my concerns. I was worried that I needed to have a papsmear in order to get a birth control prescription. She actually informed me that women under 30 only need a papsmear every 3 years. So that made me feel a lot better.
After that, she asked me what brand of birth control I wanted, then she sent it to my local pharmacy that I listed in my Maven Clinic profile.
Fastest, easiest, and cheapest doctor’s appointment ever.
